Erica Anderson's opinion.

Being a devoted Tori Amos fan, I try to collect as many of her singles/EPs I can because Tori always includes some wonderful b-sides like cover songs. The cover songs are the primary reason I bought "Crucify" 2-3 years ago. Like a lot of other reviewers, I like this version of "Crucify" over the album version found on "Little Earthquakes". It sounds closer to what I have heard in concert. I'm also glad that "Winter" wasn't altered. It is one of my all-time favorite Tori songs, not to mention ballads. As for the cover songs, I thought all three were great. I was never a Nirvana fan. I always thought they were highly overrated and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was played to death. The only credit I give Kurt Cobain and co. is for killing the careers of Poison and their ilk. I like Tori's version a lot more. I didn't find it to be for a good laugh unlike another reviewer did. Unlike Nirvana's version, I can honestly hear the lyrics being sung clearly. Tori succeeds in giving the song an emotional feel which the original version lacks (unless you count giving me a massive headache an emotional feel). I also enjoyed Tori's interpretations of "Angie" and "Thank You". I know that Tori is a big fan of Led Zeppelin so I think I understand her choice in covering a Zeppelin song, but I'm not really sure about "Angie" or "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Still her renditions were executed as well as Tori plays the piano. "Crucify" is a must have for Tori fans, new or old alike. This is not a throwaway album..
