Norah Jones biography

Norah Jones biography The talented Norah Jones came to New York and got famous in spectacular, multi-platinum fashion. Malick recorded Jones in 2000, along with four other singers (Jess Klein, Kirsten Proffit, Antje Duvekot, and his daughter Mercy). Stylistically, Malick's music is a radio-friendly blend of country and pop, with just a tinge of jazz, about love, longing, and big city life. While all of the singers have basically the same style, the six tracks with Jones's standout. Except for the slow blues number, "All of Your Love," and the organ-fueled up-tempo rocker, "Deceptively Yours," the rest of the guitar-centric music is in the mid-tempo meter. And, yes, Jones sounds the same on the quirky "Strange Transmissions" and the Nashville-nuanced "Heart of Mine" as she does now. Kudos to Mr. Malick for being in the right place and the right studio at the right time.

Norah Jones was born March 30, 1979 in New York City. Norah's earliest musical influences came from her mother's extensive LP collection and from "oldies" radio. Norah grew up in Texas with her mom Sue. She got into jazz while attending Dallas' Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. She always enjoyed singing but felt that studying piano would be a more solid foundation. She majored in jazz piano at the University of North Texas for two years before taking a trip to New York city.

When she was four, Jones moved to the Dallas suburb of Grapevine. She began singing in church choirs at the age of five, commenced piano lessons two years later, and briefly played saxophone in junior high. When Jones was 15, she enrolled in Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. (Soul singer Erykah Badu and trumpeter Roy Hargrove are also Washington alumni).
