Now Kelly is one of the hottest young pop stars on the Earth. She has been to the UK, Germany, Japan, and Australia.
Clarkson tackles the neo-gospel "Anytime" without flinching, then shows some dirty street cred as she growls through "Miss Independent," a song she penned with Christina Aguilera. But Miss Independent would be a gross misnomer; despite the fact Clarkson co-wrote four of the album's tunes. Clarkson not only had uber record exec/executive producer Clive Davis at her disposal, but an arsenal of producers and songwriters to make sure she didn't make a creative misstep. Despite Clarkson's sublime vocal talents, excessive gloss at times overwhelms the quirky charm and personality she displayed on Idol.
Why America chose Miss Kelly Clarkson as the first American Idol? Her stunning voice was the best of the competition and she puts it to use in her first 2 songs. "A Moment Like This" and "Before Your Love." The songs are very sweet and to the point, but with Kellys vocals they become soaring powerhouse ballads. Her voice is so beautiful, natural, and effortless. We have not had such a lovely voice in music in quite a while and the songs here are a nice change of pace from the rap/hip-hop/rock music getting airplay. Hopefully her entire album will be just as wonderful, and hopefully the industry won't snub her come Grammy time just because she was the product of a television show. In my opinion Kelly should win Best Female Vocal Performance. A wonderful new talent that deserves all the success that comes her way.
Clarkson was born in Fort Worth, Texas and later moved to Burleson, Texas. When she was encouraged by the choir teacher at her junior high to join the school choir, her dreams changed. She started starring in school plays and continued on with her involvement in choir. Finally when she graduated high school, Kelly started working on demo and got serious about pursing her musical career.
Kelly's stay in Los Angeles was tragically cut short after Goffin grew ill, her apartment burned down, and her car got towed. Both emotionally and financially, Kelly was drained.
She turned home to recuperate and re-energize herself before heading back to L.A. Shortly thereafter, her best friend, Jessica, presented her with paperwork for American Idol, FOX Television's national talent search competition/television show.
When asked what the greatest thing to come out of the American Idol experience was, Kelly said, "the best moment for me was when I realized that I actually really wanted this. This is a public life now, and I wasn't sure if I wanted to do that part of it...The defining point was during my performance of "Natural Woman." I was on stage and the crowd was just going crazy, and I was like, I think I can do this."
She put forth typical effort in searching for work, and landed a job as an extra on the television show Sabrina, the Teenage Witch. In a mild stroke of luck for the development of her singing career, she answered a newspaper ad looking for female vocalists and found herself working with famous songwriter Gerry Goffin.
Kelly Clarkson and fellow American Idol contestant Justin Guarini starred in their own movie in 2003 called "From Justin to Kelly."
Kelly Clarkson really hasn't slowed down since taking home the American Idol crown. Soon after she won, her debut album, Thankful, was released. It featured songs like Miss Independent and Beautiful Disaster. Some thought that Kelly's time in the spotlight might be over after her first disc, but she came back in late 2004 with her second disc, Breakaway.
As of July 2005, she is the top-selling American Idol contestant, having sold approximately five million albums in the U.S. and having had five Top 10 singles.
"Breakaway," was her album of parting ways with her "American Idol" image, producing a serious artist image, in that she wrote some of her own songs, many with a rock sound a la Sheryl Crow and Michelle Branch, while appealing to more of a mature, Adult Contemporary audience. It worked: she topped both the mainstream Top 40 and AC Charts, at the same time, with different songs. Judging from the adoration her voice and charisma have already earned her, it is fairly safe to say that she will stick around a long time for us to idolize.
Her music video for "Because of You" debuted at #1 on TRL. The only other artists to achieve this goal are Britney Spears, Eminem, and NSYNC.
