Directed by Ridley Scott (Alien), Gladiator is a powerful action-packed epic movie that ranks as one of the best movies of 2000. After years of loyal service to Rome, heroic Roman general Maximus (Russell Crowe) is awarded to become the next emperor of Rome but the emperor's jealous son (Joaquin Phoenix) betrays Maximus and sentences him to death. After escaping his execution, Maximus returns home and finds his family brutally murdered. Alone and broken, Maximus is enslaved and forced to the life of an arena gladiator. With his courage and skill, Maximus earns the admiration of the Roman public and rivals the authority of the new emperor. Russell Crowe delivers a powerful performance as a larger-than-life hero. The story is breathtaking and the action sequence are excellent. The opening battle sequence is visually amazing and very intense. (Spotlight Reviews)

I saw this film directly after seeing Pearl Harbour and by comparason it appeared a work of towering genious. Probably this swayed me a bit and the film seemed well written, well paced and it also had some interesting ideas and plot switches. Arnie's previous outing the End of Days was a bit below par and this was a return to a good action yarn. Despite all that the film has an interesting plot. Arnie finds that he has been cloned and then is hunted down by the orgnisation which has made the clone. The key to action adventure films is to have a convincing villain. This film has a number including a number of trained killers who have the power to come back from the dead. (Customer Review)

Angelina Jolie excels as Lady Lara Croft, a wealthy English archaeologist, and modern-times female version of Indiana Jones/James Bond in this video game adaptation. Not only does she look fantastic swinging through the air on bungee cords, knocking out menacing villains clad in black but she totally looks and acts the part of the Tomb Raider heroine Lara Croft, like she was born to play this role. She is stunningly attractive and looks every inch the action hero and what's more, her English accent is absolutely spot on. However, despite her valiant efforts this really is a soul-less film served up by Director Simon West (Con Air) that fails to live up to the excitement of the video games. The action scenes are merely a collection of set-pieces (often borrowed from other movies) that somehow fail to thrill and the plot (what plot?) is about as uninspiring as they come. (Review)

Movies like this are painful for me to watch. I don't handle suspense very well, and end up with knots and kinks all over my neck and back from the tension. But don't let this detract you from watching this movie! The plot is easy to understand and follow, and we have seen it many times: white glove robber is presented with the score of his lifetime, and he is paired up with a young, smart buck to do the job. Norton, De Niro and Brando are absolutely fabulous and it is their superb acting what gives the movie the richness it has. For those who like Jazz, there is the opportunity to see Cassandra Wilson, Charnett Moffett and Mose Allison perform a few scenes. I am slightly disappointed about the final scene, because it was rather abrupt, but this does not detract from the previous 89 minutes of excellent cinematography. (Review)
